Low And Clear.

Water flows are at July levels now. It's a little unsettling seeing water levels this low at this time of year. Even our fire rating is in the summer zone this week. What does this hold for the rest of the season? We are going to have our usual wait and see attitude and make decisions as needed. We know one fact. When you work with Mom Nature, she can be a bitch. Deal with her appropriately.

Small streams are coming along nicely this week. Very spooky conditions due to water clarity and lack of foliage. Be stealthy. 4X already.
Medium sized freestone rivers are in prime flows right now. Very few changes due to our non existent snow pack and ice out. Clarity a 8 out of 10.
Large rivers are lower than normal. Some at levels we have never seen in April. Easy to get around and gain some experience on new water.

Bugs we've seen this week include the mighty midge and few leftover small black stones. It's still a nymphing game for a bit. Not a bad thing, just not a dry fly thing. Getting the goods the dark way.

This may be an April to remember.

  1. The streams here are the same. It makes for some very spooky trout.
