April's Over.

I feel a change coming on.
Bob Dylan.
Fished and scouted two medium size rivers and three small streams this week.Water temps varied from 39 to 45 degrees. Weather was as varied as the water temperature. We saw rain, snow, sleet and wind. Needless to say don't put away the puffy, gloves or beanie just yet. Very few midges around. Those that did hatch are now in New Brunswick. The little black stones are pretty much done.Baetis? Maybe next week. Smaller streams and rivers are a better prospect when the larger rivers are high. With as many small streams and brooks that are in this state the options are many.

Nymphing and streamers were the standard. Basic patterns (Hare's Ear,P.Ts,Midge pupa and Copper Johns) presented at the right depth will reward you. Don't be afraid to lose a rig or flies.

Streamers worked low and slow. Dark colors over bright. The D3 technique works best(Deep Deaddrifted Dredge) in slower runs and pools. Introduce yourself to a sink tip and receive a solid handshake from the depths.

New Guide Trainee.

We added a new guide to the stable this season. Huckleberry (Huck) has been surprising in his ability to not bite fish or spook water. His boat manners are a work in progress. If I can teach him to row and spot fish I'll retire. He should be ready to accompany a single client float trip later this season.

Something New This Season!

Welcome to my new blog. After much deliberation and consideration I've decided to enter the realm of technology. What I hope to offer on this blog is some helpful information, gear reviews, trip ideas and condition reports.

I realize the power of the web. Don't expect detailed locations,GPS directions or turnkey type reports. As a guide I fully understand my responsibility to the resource and I'm under no illusion that reports are harmless. I'll do my best.

That's not to say I won't write some trip reports that I feel will help spread folks out. More on that later.

Gear reviews will be honest and unbiased.Helpful information will be whatever my mind can no longer obtain within.

I hope you find this blog useful, funny and informative. Bring on the 2010 season!!!!
